You just take the first letter of "judge" from a word meaning "idiomatic language" and you get a chemical element. It's not a thematic clue.
I am still stuck on the top jeft-hand corner. Any hints for 2 down and 13 across would be most welcome.

2d is not thematic. Defn is the last three words

13a is thematic. Defn is the last two words, by example

Yes, it's the usual public school.

In 13, there is no parsing to do for the original solution is there, as it's just the def?

It's the thematic that needs to be parsed - or have I misunderstood you?

Thanks Nelson. Yes I was trying to make sense of how "drug" fitted into the original solution but I see now that it fits on the end of the actually entered answer.

I'm confused now - I have 7 across and 7 down thematics! I've recounted several times with my other half and we both get the same result. Can anyone else confirm? thanks

If the clue was 'skink' it would make sense - I can't corroborate the spelling of the enzyme using the guts of skunk. Any helpful pointers on that one please?

guts (middles) of sKUNk hAd uSEd gives kunase ...now do the thematic bit backwards to see the enzyme...
