Kick indeed falling short (4) *U**

The final letter can be either T or R. I can only get to PUNT, but how would that parse?

It's a different sense of "kick" you're looking for

Thanks, but still one the wiser! SPUR also fits.

It's a five letter word that you might say instead of "indeed" short its last letter

Not "kick" as in spur either!

Bobbycollins think of kick as in the habit.

I'm finding this very hard indeed, cannot get on the setter's wavelength.
Some I've got but can't parse:

39a Nut dip is something for salad (6).
If it's 'endive' how does nut = en?

41a Feel bias after moving on (8)
If it's feasible, where's the definition?

29 MC with Motown track and another that's local (8)
Hostelry? MC = host, ry = track, but how does 'el' mean Motown?

39 no idea
41 "It's on" = "it's feasible" - not a good clue
29 the EL is the elevated railway in Chicago. Unfortunately, Motown is Detroit, I think.

Nut and en are terms in printing.

Thanks jono. I know "en", but what does "nut" mean in printing?
