“Nut”is an old printing term for an “en” space, the space taken up by the letter “n”. There’s also “mutton” for an “em” space, which is twice the size of an en space.

Half an "em" is known as an "en". As these words sound so alike many printers refer to them as "mutton" and "nut" respectively.

Interesting Jono.
I had an English teacher who always used to say M for mother and N for naughty. She'd obviously not heard of the Nato phonetic alphabet either!

I have also had trouble with parsing some. Still unresolved is 43 across:

Provokes some backtracking, closeting invitees. (7)

I have 'ignites' as that means provokes and fits with the letters I have, but can't see rest of the parsing.

Thanks for the previous answers. Some more that have left me perplexed:

1a One's angling positively the way to make you go off fish? (4,6)
Looks like 'spin doctor', but where's 'the way to make you go off fish?"

25a Film, slow burner at first tedious, finally entrances (7)
w?c?e?s
Wickets?

29a Very hard to beat, with means to pick up (6,3,5).
Looks like 'hammer and tongs' but this means enthusiastic, not very hard, and I can't see the 'means to pick up'.

1a - If you "spin" "doctor" you get 'Rot Cod' which would make you "go off fish"

25a - "film" = ET + "slow burner" = WICK + (tediou)S - definition is "entrances" It's in Chambers as a small gate or door.

29a - I think the definition could be a "means to pick (something) up" but I'm not sure of the rest.

Hammer - beat
Tongs - means to pick up (something)
Very hard could be a meaning of hammer and tongs, as in a fight, for example
