All done but one - can anyone give me a tip on "Defeat following trouble for Trump" (5). Wordplay generates one extra letter.
Lovely crossword by Gila with an interesting theme, but it's frustrating to be left with one loose end!

The thematic answer is a fencing weapon as well as a"leaf" of thin metal; knowing the extra letter should explain the wordplay

My brain is all used up by yesterday's Listener, and though I have a full grid and 5 extra words I can see no connection between them. The extra letters make an interesting sentence, but sucking meaning from it is so far eluding me. A gentle hint would be welcome.

The first two words (4,4) from the cryptic clue are the definition for the individual's particular claim to fame. The five extra words all share a common meaning, so you have "five ?????s left". If you're still stuck, you probably don't know the individual so try Google. The person's other output is hidden in the grid, and also comes up on a Google search.

Read the first word of the clue given by the extra letters as a type of music. The name is 4, 5.

Thanks muraria. I was fixated on Pendragon, who fitted the sentence equally well both as to definition and wordplay. I confess the individual had passed me by, but at least 5 minutes of reading wiki had taught me something rather sad.

Just a little story.
I realised that cracking the two 12 letter and two 11 letter clues was key to filling in the grid.
The first one I spent time on was “Borderline acceptable . . . “ which seemed pretty obviously to involve an anagram. My solution was NOT BORN HERE, with A as the surplus letter. (Yes, I eventually realised there was only one R to play with – but not until much later.)
I thought this was perhaps an old snobby/racist expression re ‘acceptability’ that I’d never come across.
Whatever. I then decided that the right hand column looked the most likely place for it, and duly entered it. This helped me solve the entry for the top row - and so go on to fill almost all the grid before twigging that there had to be something wrong.
So, massive error. But made hardly any difference.

May I ask for a shove in the direction of the commonality of the five extra words? And just to confirm that they are correct they start F N P P V respectively.

The commonality is pretty tenuous for some of them although thorough delving in Chambers does verify that they all link to something you might find on a table or tree.
