Hi Rossim,

4d - Me too - My new upstairs neighbours are doing some work on their flat and so, by way of apologising for any noise and inconvenience, brought me down a box of Thorntons chocolates 😜

I too thought this was a really good crossword. FOI 3d. Liked 12a and 16d (surprised no one else has mentioned this) , COD 26a but liked 21a once I had got it as LOI.

I got through quite quickly till I had 5 to go, and then got stuck for what seemed like ages. Then I twigged the 4-3 split on the moral philosopher, got the 4 but needed Google's help for the whole. Not too many philosophers ending in hog! And then, of course, the rest just
followed.

Re 5d, I thought of the poet rather than the lady but not familiar enough with his work to make a case for him.

Enjoy the chocolates, Brendan!

Thanks Will - I love chocolate, I really do 😃

5d - Wiki specifically mentions how GE was "praised her novels for their depictions of rural society" so I'd say it's very probably her.

21a - There's been a few posts heaping praise on this clue, and justifiably so.

PS You're not alone in checking Google to make sure there were no moral philosophers whose name ended in "hog" 😉

On 5d, no-one seems to have picked up on my comment that it's the cop's firstname, not his surname...

thanks for that jono, warden and luko.. I'd say I have a similar approach to you all... I guess it's a mixture of using what you do already know, reverse-engineering what you don't yet know from what you do, and then when all else fails phoning a friend ;)

chrise,
While solving, the use of the "Untouchables" leader's first name in 5 also struck me as odd, but it was obviously the right answer so I let it go.
