Yes, very enjoyable. My favourites were FOI 1a, and 26a raised a smile.

Where's the "bar" in 6d?

5d is odd, if I've got it right. "depicter of English rural life" isn't an obvious description of either of the authors I've thought of, and he seems to be on firstname terms with the cop.

Hi Chris,
6d ends in a word for bar with the T changed to H. The first three letter come from the clue.
The author (I had assumed) is a female writer with a male pen name.

Thanks jono. That makes 6d very clever!

Good one again. Thanks to setter and all, Some very clever anagrams and hidden words favourite 8d 21a had to guess at.

It was my youngest son's 21st yesterday, and I got 8d before bedtime, so for serendipity alone it is my COD :-)
I sometimes struggle with the Latin and classical clues, as my London comprehensive didn't go into those much, but I got them today, so feeling pleased with myself
LOI 26a .. is the clue the most extremely corny for a while ?

A lovely quick one this morning, with few hold ups although a couple of questions.
I agree with the concern about 1D, it was obviously the answer but it feels more clumsy than we expect. I also agree with Chrise@31 on 5d, it would work much better with 'provincial' rather than 'rural' and I wonder if Everyman misremembered a subtitle? (TBH I did, and the mistake helped me to the answer so I can't complain!)

This might seem a bit "pedant's corner" bit isn't the second part of 18d a particular cut of a limb of the animal mentioned in the clue rather than a synonym for said animal?

Also I must be having a senior moment because although I can see a few words that fit the crossers D-S-E-T- I can't even begin to understand what's going on with LOI 2d. Any pointers please?

2d a cobbler is an example of this, and you can read the entire word in reverse...

Enjoyable puzzle again today, enhanced as ever by the comments on this friendly forum.

By the way, just a general question about how far puzzlers like to go for help to find the solution- when people write "thanks to Google" or "lucky for Google", what does that mean exactly? Does you simply google the answer? Or google an aspect of the clue/theme for extra clues?

My dad always thought that even word finders where you put in the crossers were pushing the limit of 'a helping hand'. Interested to know where people stand :)
