I've filled the grid as best I can. I have identified the theme and seen the first 5 elements. I am pretty sure I have seen the 9th element too, the one always associated with the theme.
Struggling, though with the other 3.
I have looked in vain at the you right of my grid. There is a 4 letter word in the bottom left of my grid that might just fit in, but as to the others, I'm stumped.
It says that 2 are abbreviations...does that apply to the last 3 I am struggling with ?
As I am typing I can see another 5 letter word at the bottom that might fit somehow.
Not into racing I'm afraid.

No the abbrevs are solutions to clues. The words (normal) you want are 4,5,4 letters. Look at top right and bottom right. I think you have the 5 letter one - it is at the bottom.

I can see the 5 letter word horizontally at the bottom right.
Beside it vertically is a 4 letter word which might also be associated with the theme.
At the top right where others have suggested I look is a 4 letter word horizontally that I cannot see has any relationship to the theme. But I may have solved that particular clue wrongly.

Also....I cannot see any pattern when I shade in the elements...maybe I should Google the theme a but more and see if anything comes clear.

Have looked again at Google and at my grid. And I think it has all come clear.
Even the 'map' bit.

I wondered why the setter did not put the second of the 3 elements into the appropriate shape? He might have tried but found it difficult to fit in.
