3d - Girl brought up too much dye. Is the answer Arnotto, please? I know that is a dye and can see ott as too much (up) but can't parse the rest.

Hi, Malone,

I think it’s spelled “annatto” (Chambers gives several alternative spellings, but none with an “e”).

Thanks, Wintonian. I should have remembered that, it's a word we've seen before!

Parsing help please!

I've completed this week's puzzle but remain unable to parse two of the clues.

5a should be straightforward: "Grave sin - eliminating men in hostile circumstances" (6) The solution must be ENMITY but I cannot see the "grave sin" which I have to remove "men" from - if that's what's required. I'm sure I'll kick myself...

16d "Flier uncovered book of navigational routes" (7) I've got ORTOLAN.
I can see a book in there (OT) and I can also see ORLAN backwards in the clue. No idea how to put it together though. It struck me that a navigational route could be an LAN - at a stretch.

5 A. Maybe Enormity, grave sin, dropping the OR/other ranks/men?

16 Portolano, a navigation manual in the middle ages, drops the first and last letters.

Thanks, Zinc - I hadn't ever heard of it myself, I investigated only because of your query!
