Hi Bunty, not sure I understand. I see how tenor gives me the required letter but I thought the first 4 words were simply an anagram (confused) producing 'a singer'. Which rather leaves 'but not her' not doing much!

The anagram produces a certain type of singer, but Mimi is not that type.

Thanks buddy for the letter counts. I too was mightily confused about how to implement the preamble’s instructions. Without your post, I don’t think I’d ever have got there.

I just have the highlighting to go. I’ve identified the two linked locations. Which leaves me a further 17 cells to highlight. I’ve looked on a map and see the thoroughfare required (it’s 17 letters so I’m hoping it’s right). There are some near hits but I don’t see it in it’s entirety. Help!

Merenz, it's not a thoroughfare, it's a mechanism, starting in row 2,column 1.

Thank you muraria. You’ve saved me from tearing my hair out. I’ve found the appropriately shaped linking mechanism. However, with the two locations, I have only 28 cells highlighted. Unless I pluralise it and go back on myself at the end?

After highlighting the two locations, the "mechanism" is (9,10), but it shares two letters with the lower location. That should give you 29

Brilliant. Thanks Buddy. All done now.

I wonder if Augeas intentionally created a link the same length as the thoroughfare, and engineered a jumbled ‘street’ by the southern location to add to the subterfuge. If so, it was a very devious red herring.

A very clever crossword all in all. Thanks Augeas. Although, in my view, the instruction in the preamble about the groups was confusing.

I think that it was deliberately confusing. If it had been straightforward, we would have complained that the puzzle was too darned easy!
As it was, it produced an acceptable degree of head-scratching and a very satisfying conclusion.
