I thought the use of jumbles perfectly valid. There is a unique solution to the puzzle with no ambiguity.

If there's anything I dislike more than jumbles, it's letter counting (NB, Harribobs!). But in this case the jumbles were ameliorated to a large extent by the theme words. I wish I could remember what tipped me to the theme - sometimes these things just happen - but it was an enormous help with filling the grid.

For me the alphanumeric tomfoolery was a final confirmation stage - not entirely necessary but I did it just so I could collect my gold star from teacher. I can see that reliance on this to get the theme could be a nightmare - you'd have to cold solve enough of the clues to identify the relevant clues - and no doubt that's why opinion is divided. I still found this bloody hard, but I'm definitely in the positive camp,

Brilliant puzzle, enjoyed it more than any recent Listener I can remember.
There was a puzzle on this theme in the last few years I think, (poss Inquisitor) so I guessed the theme pretty quickly - from the mention of scenes. The rest was a joy.

I wish to add my thanks to Gnomish as this was a tough enough puzzle for a bank holiday weekend to keep me busy. PDM moment was very satisfying. Thanks again

Could someone please clarify what is meant by 'reveal' in the preamble (in this and others)? Is it sufficient to have the key words present in the grid, or should they also be highlighted? I ask because key words appear in red in the solutions, even when there's no instruction to highlight. Thanks.
