Actually I think it's REV (Spooner) + ERE (old spelling of 'ever') + ND

I don't think so, whetstone. The wordplay you've come up with is ingenious, but then there's no definition. I think the def. is "Perhaps Spooner".

I've seen 2 or 3 "anti-Spooner clues" in the last few months - i.e. clues that reference Spooner that aren't Spoonerisms.

8d. Put up with a foot of slime? It's more than an inch
SKYE

Parse?
Other than the island, is there another meaning for SKYE?

Tentative suggestion: put up could be sky (as in cricket or tennis - a bit weak, I know) and foot of slime in a down clue would be E (although "slime" isn't being written downwards; SKYE is).

I'm happier about the definition. An "inch" is also a small Scottish island, and Skye certainly isn't small. I've only passed through on the way to Harris, but from crossing the bridge to the ferry terminal at Uig was 50 miles!

Nice , had no idea that inch refers to a small island in Scotland. Not a great clue in my opinion.

"Inch" is cognate with the Irish "Innis", as in "The lake isle of Innisfree"
