One of my crossword group has remembered doing a crossword by Araucaria, possibly in the 1990s, which was based on the game of bridge in the clues and the structure. He says it was complex and intriguing, and we’d like to try it, but I’ve been unable to find it via the internet or in my Araucaria books collection, so am wondering if anyone here remembers it and can point me in the right direction? Thank you!

Be aware that BBM's first link is to the fifteensquared blog, so it will show all the answers.

Thanks bigbadmarty2 but I think the one we’re trying to find was earlier than that as it was completed with a parent who died in 2000.
It was apparently very complex with reference to NEW and S as in bridge...

Unfortunately fifteensquared only goes back to 2006.
Good luck with your search.

I can definitely recall a puzzle with north, south east, west around the edges, as if at a bridge table. I just don’t know how to search for it.
Do let us know if you find it as I’m rather intrigued!

If all else fails you could try contacting the Guardian to see if they still have it in their archives.

Hello Jono, Yes, that was indeed part of what my friend remembered. It sounds fascinating. I shall keep looking. Trouble is, it was maybe thirty years ago...

Good idea. You could also post the question on the general discussion thread over on fifteensquared

I think that this elusive puzzle has already been discussed on Fifteen Squared, though that may be my memory playing tricks. No harm in trying again, of course. As far as I can see the Guardian archive starts at 1999, so it's unlikely the puzzle is available given the dates you mention. Google search produces nothing useful, as you'll have found out yourself.

The suggestion to contact the Guardian is a good one but from past experience, you may well be telling your disbelieving great-grandchildren stories about lockdown before you get a reply - if you get one at all. Good luck!
