I wasn't convinced by the lyrical version, bobbycollins - a different correction for 11d offers a more prosaic translation.

I've got "mUred" and "maiN" as the 5th and 6th letters of the second word giving "chacun.

....or were you referring to the final French word? If so I've got "chance" with the second C coming from sCale - but this word has to equate to "order" and there are a few possibilities so .....?

Yes, I also went for 'scale', brendan (but there are a few possibilities for that 5 letter word - it's quite a devious clue).

Yes, it must be "chance" which now gives my phrase as "a chacun vient sa chance" Thanks to you both.
