Kirky, that sounds about right. I didn't bother gathering all the letters needed for the phrase, it wasn't actually necessary.

I have not started it yet as I dont know much French. Is it one of the easier ones? If it is I will have a go.

Grunger, I don't think you'll need much French. Once you have the first thematic bit, the others should follow. It also helps if you just solve the 'undefined but otherwise plain clues' - 5 Down is a good place to start.

thanks Jlc

Indiana it is - but not a very good clue in my opinion. However each to this own or "chacun goute something" or other.

Thanks - I will have a go. Does "plain" mean cryptic with no gimmicks, or non-cryptic?

Grunger, thanks. I thing 'plain' was cryptic with no gimmicks, no definition - there's wordplay, normal wordplay.

grunger, the plain clues are cryptic without definition. The actual definitions all relate to the same kind of thing, some specific, some generic. You'll need rudimentary French to get the phrase which I roughly translated as "his song comes to everybody".

A couple of clues for the plain.

24 across - 4 letter word for secures. 3 letter for a South American revolutionary and the usual abbreviation for rule (8)

36 across hidden word (7)

5 down usual one letter abbreviation for take plus a sporting word for six balls (5)
