Could there be a greater contrast than this week’s Listener and EV? Hours later I have 6 across entries and 10 unentered down answers in the former. The latter didn’t outlast a cuppa - which is not yet finished.

Likewise Jack - but it has given me more time to catch up with a few things.

I enjoyed the red herring which, if I hadn't carefully checked all the unches, meant I would have played the wrong game.

I might have missed something but I carefully noted all the overlaps expecting them to be significant but I’m not seeing anything. This was supposed to take me up till wine o’clock but it failed!

I think it's the double clueing which is meant to raise a smile - they are all connected words making phrases in their own right.

I agree, I thought it a clever idea. I also got the game wrong until I checked. One of the easiest but very enjoyable.

Am I missing the red herring? All my unches work out.

But not if you chose, as I did initially, a card game.
