Sorry, I misunderstood your question, ignore that reply. I thought you were referring to the the magic number, whether it should be written as words or in digits. - I left the answers in the crossword as they were.

I made one of these with a magic number of 42; had it engraved on a glass paperweight as a present with a suitable legend on my wife's birthday :-)

You'll also find that the four central squares and the four corners sahre the same magic as well as any continuous diagonal.
I'm also seeing that pairs of symmetrical 'knight's moves' (i.e., A1,B3,C3,D1 etc) are magic too.

... however, I still don't get how 23 works. two-letter 'quiet!' doesn't seem to do anything for me, nor a one-letter musical quiet.

Hi Jvector,

I think it's NO then a 7 letter word for "defence" (not a usual definition I don't think) with the A and P at the front replaced by M(oney).
