That was fun :)

LOI was 20d which I'd never heard of - I ended up using the magic of the grid to fix some additional letters, and even then I needed to do a word search.

Favourites were 8d and 11a.

Agreed, that was fun and well constructed. I wonder if Qaos considered 42? 😉

Wow! Amazing construction and the magic that follows.

Just stuck on some wordplay.

23a - can't see last part of solution
28a - can't see wordplay at all
6d - ditto

Just some subtle hints would be good please. Many thanks.

Conventional abbreviation for money replacing a plus conventional abbreviation for quiet in a six letter word for defence, after ‘no’.

Five letter word for build; ‘r’ moved to the end, plus two letters.

Decapitated can, abbreviation for shilling, then a shortened version of the last word.

Thanks hw7.
Can't believe that I missed 23 and 6 because I'd been playing around with the relevant words. 28, yep fair cop.

so here i am, with a filled grid, 16 letters identified and turned into numerics, and without the first idea of how to convert 16 numbers into one magical answer...

can/would anyone nudge without giving up too much?

thanks in advance

if you have sixteen symmetrical numbers, look at the ten straight lines you can make from them

Alas the final bit of magic is still eluding me!

I've converted the 16 letters to numbers and can see that each row adds up to the same number but that's where I falter. I've seen the post saying to draw 10 lines but it just looks like a gate, not like the double-digit number which even if converted to Roman numerals is only 9 lines - where am I going wrong?
