Paulh, I don't know if you do the Guardian Prize crosswords, but this Saturday's has a theme which will be familiar to you.

Mattrom, I don't see the Guardian but have just looked at the Feb. 20 Prize online. In a quick run through the clues I solved QUEENS and MATE, so I see what you probably mean. I'll probably download and give the whole thing a try. Thanks.

Now I see the Guardian Prize has been referred to on a chess forum. 'The compiler is a chess player who takes a keen interest in the game.'

Qaos - I'd be interested to know his/her real name.

Caveat: anonymity seems to be quite a thing for compilers and, indeed, some internet forums, so I would understand if revelations were inappropriate.

Jono, thanks for the interesting link to Qaos. His chess rating has been inactive since 1997, so I suspect he played seriously at/for Trinity College, Cambridge, but not subsequently.

Tricky. It's a shame that several otherwise excellent clues had unsignalled Definition By Example ("?" or "perhaps", perhaps?). buddy's @27 is a good example.
