Please tell me that 5 to the right is 2 cells, which actually makes it look like 5 down

That's correct gitto, the down entries always move to the left or right, never straight down.

... and inspection of 2a and 2dR gives G immediately, then consider 6a and 3dL also ...

I have managed to complete all of the clues and allotted numbers to all of the letters. The completed grid I have seems to be correct as all answers are fully interlocking. However, as it seems obvious as to what goes in the top and bottom right triangles seems obvious, I am totally perplexed by the bottom LH corner as the "word" does not mean anything to me, unless Z works for S.

Yes, the Z should be read as an S.

Think that’s fair when one is trying to make a message from 15 different letters!

Thanks Candledave, now I know that there is a little bit of mischievous spelling I can stop worrying that a) My message was somehow corrupt or that b) my assumed relationship between the adjacent cells was incorrect. I found that the first 5 or 6 letters were quite easy to resolve, then it became a bit of a slog for me. In the end I took a leap of faith in what I had convinced myself must be right - and hey-ho, it was.

Would someone be kind enough to signpost where I have gone wrong

1. 2A, 2DR give G =10
2. 14A, 9DR give A = 1, N=5
3. As 9DL can't end in 0, O=9, Z=15
4. Hence 8DR takes the form 81L(x) = ?315, hence L(x) =115 and L =
23 (too large) or 5 (already taken by N)

All ok midgers until 8D where you’re missing a perimeter cell at the end.

Would look elsewhere.

Quite new to all this, what are the ethics of submitting the puzzle if you've been on here?
