Thanks Malone, I could see the part = region but not how SA meant religious group. Didn't know that the Salvation Army can be referred to as just SA and still mean anything to most people.

What am I missing with 26d?

26d Number of cats and dogs? (8)

With all the checkers in place, I can see the answer is RAINFALL, and we can call that raining cats and dogs, but why the number? Where's the cryptic? I can't even think of it as something that numbs you.

Puzzled to say the least. Many thanks to anyone who can put me out of my misery.

The expression raining cats and dogs means it's raining heavily.
Therefore there would have to be a large number of them.
I think it's as simple as that.....unless I'm missing something too.
