The second three letters are a word for critical. Definition is cross. The answer is a portmanteau word

At last I've finished. This was quite a challenge.
The bottom half came together fairly easily. However, I made the mistake of jumping in and putting the C in the wrong place. That cost me about two hours!

I'm making good progress getting answers in the grid, but must stop for Montlebana. Be back later.

I did exactly the same Rossim! I also noticed, too late of course, there are some subtle indicators, like ‘up’ and ‘under’, which signal certain clues as being down clues
