I feared a Playfair (so we got away without one last year, yay!) or a Harribobs count-letters-around-the-grid-until-you-go-mad monster, so this came as something of a relief. I enjoyed it while it lasted, but it would have been all the better for tougher clues and/or a more complex treatment of the theme.

Happy (or happier, anyway) New Year to all contributors and to Norah and the team who keep this forum running so smoothly.

All done now. I do hope Loge is not tempting fate with a forthcoming playfair because I hate them. The puzzles do need to get back to a normal level of Listener difficulty, because this was a stroll in the park.

i have to say I am underwhelmed. Is there any significance (besides the trivial one) in these twelve choices? I suspect that if I Googled them individually I would find a tenuous link, but not a very interesting one.

Yes it was easy but I liked a couple of the clues especially 28a.

Definitely one for the morning after the night before!

I have been working through Listener 3234 New Year’s Resolution by Dimitry from 1st January 1994. If you ever get the chance to solve it, I would recommend it and what is clear is the massive difference in difficulty of that one and today’s offering. I enjoyed today’s puzzle but it was over far too quickly. I challenge anyone to finish Dimitry’s puzzle in such a short time!
Happy New Listener Year to the many forum contributors.

That’s interesting Unclued, how did you get hold of that puzzle from 1994?

Dave, I found it in a book of Listener Crosswords published in 2002 which is now alas out of print. You may be able to pick up a second hand copy somewhere. The book has a blue cover.

Ok thanks.

I see the Times Crossword Club goes back to about 2001 so am sure there’s plenty in there to keep me busy!

phil535, I agree with you that 28a was a great clue. You might guess that I would feel that way from my user name.

OK, so I know most of it was "ridiculously easy" but I'm stuck on 28A. The crossing letters provide a vaguely appropriate entry but I cannot make anything from the clue. A nudge, anyone?
