Once I got started, I began to enjoy filling the grid. But the endgame was excruciating. It's rare for me to give up when in sight of the finish, but I just couldn't be bothered anymore.

Can someone please explain how you get the "E" as the 5th letter of
RHINEMAIDENS.... after RHI there was a clash D/N...so use the N and use the D as counter .....doesn't give E ??
Maybe the D was wrong from peDal ...clue was ..ultimately Motorhead has to ring around for guitar effects unit

The D is correct and does give an E.

Either you’re not continuing on the same path, which is a mistake I made a couple of times, or you have an error in the next word which should be the reversed European summit
