Thanks, tatters. Another enjoyable one.

Ever since Loge posted that comment on a dubious plural I have been trying to understand what he meant. Now that has been explained I don't see a problem at all. The item from the first work is not an entry, but hidden by bars, thus I see no problem in ignoring its last letter in making the change, nor in reading the first bit of the second work.

Loge, I think your point has some validity. The preamble does suggest that the second work results from changes to the whole of the remainder of the first work. A light adjustment to the wording of the preamble would have resolved that issue.

Thanks Murky. I think the point I made was a reasonable one, but it was a mistake to post it so soon in the thread, when I had to be deliberately vague to avoid spoilers. I get the impression that it caused a few solvers to waste time questioning perfectly valid answers, which is obviously not what one wants on a help forum!

I came late to this and have just finished it. It would be a shame for the “plural” thing to obscure the elegant “symmetry” the transition brings between the two works. (Apologies for the poor pun.)
