My point is that acer IS used like oak or pine. I'm well aware of the Latin names of oak and pine; I could give you the "proper" name of every plant that grows on my land. I would, however, write that most of the acers I have are A. rubrum. Did you see the link I posted? Oaks and acers and beeches? Do you argue with Oxford?

...but loosely. Surely in the Eastern US, you must have heard of maples?

I am not very good at this, but here goes:

Vehicle maker replaces front of Mercedes with alien substitute (9)

Car+maker, m replaced by ET.

...actually "acers" is acceptable, but "acer" is doubtful. That's the system that I have learned to apply.

Chambers, too, has acer in lower case, as a plant of the genus Acer, just as one would say that oak is one of the genus Quercus. No, I've never heard of maples. How insulting can you be?

@Mattrom

My #23 is a variation on my #10, trying (miserably) to get the Danish word 'tak' , which means 'thank you', into a clue.

I seem to have quite accidentally offended both mattorm and aristo. Please accept that this was quite unintentional, and accept my utmost apologies.

Thanks, Spike, I now know some Danish, and that there is a 'Grateful Dane' distillery in Houston.
