If you're referring to the genus specifically it should be capitalized, but the word can be used, uh, generically, like oak or pine, in lower case.

Those examples aren't equivalent. Acer is the genus, but "oak" and "pine" aren't - they are [i}Quercus and Pinus respectively.]
