Imagine you are faced with the puzzle for the first time. Most folk probably run through the clues hoping to fill a few squares. Clues including..."Kent town" ...(4) or ..."agreement"... (4) ..."timber"..(4) would have me at least pencilling in the very likely answer. I call these "write-ins" and so do others. As I said this tends to happen when the letter count is low thus reducing further any ambiguity.
