if the asker doesn't state "hints" i would assume that they want an answer or a VERY heavy hint. I started this thread and was happy to receive the answers from buddy...after being on the puzzle for several hours. Like Malone says ....if you don't want to see any answers/heavy hints don't come on here.
We don't want to have 2 threads going for every single prize crossword!!

Can I just check if the "murderer in 1d is the usual suspect from the Bible? Only that makes 14a start IE which isn't giving many "plaited straws"? (Although I do still have 2 clashes to find)

Yes, it's the usual murderer. 14 A doesn't start like that....

Thanks Malone, I'm still stuck, though, also with 28a - i just can't make sense of these two... Psiedal...chiedal...xiedal..Pied wagtail! bipedal! I'm going round in circles - I've put my letters with the asterisks in Chambers but I'm just not seeing them. With 28a there's a word that almost fits that means '(to do something) again' but I've got an A where there should be a E?

Thanks, Brendan. You were probably out of the rhythm of spotting clashes, letter counts that weren't and so on if you weren't doing this all in one sitting. I knew you'd get there!
