Thanks tatters, the penny has finally dropped. I had heard of this happening but went up a blind alley involving an Einstein quote - doh!

Drxx, loge, thanks for the perseverance and patience - I got there in the end.

All clear now......but that’s a bit of a damp squib.

A real struggle all in after a simple grid fill - an endgame that involves a phrase I’ve never heard of and a word I’ve never heard of.....but at least I’ve learnt a couple of new things!

My thoughts exactly, CD. Just out of interest, did anyone else waste time trying to find a phrase that included the word BLESS?

Yes, loge - and Black... and a hundred other B things.

Yep loge, I was quite pleased with myself thinking of that, but after looking up many variants of phrases of God Bless You, I realised I was barking up (another) wrong tree!

Thanks, everyone. I’ve got it at last, and agree that it’s a damp squib. In fact I’d go further and say that it’s unfair that the word to be highlighted is not an English word in Chambers. The preamble doesn’t indicate this fact. True, it doesn’t say that everything has to be in C, but this seems to be implied by the information that 10 is in another dictionary.

It would have been much more satisfying and in keeping with the theme to REMOVE something from the final grid- the changing of one letter was pretty random.

Now to get "Paint it Lack" out of my head....

The hints below I got me across the line. Many thanks! I don’t think I’d have got there otherwise. It does seem to me that it’s the three-word phrase that is the cryptic indicator for the title (in that it contains the anagrind), not the other way round which the intro seems to suggest.

Thanks for the tips for the thematic phrase. I wouldn't have got it in a month of Sundays!
