Yes, the Sunday Times is similar, jack aubrey - the answer (W...) matches the clue in an &lit way, but not Ifor's clue - 'leader' is an extra word and the answer is a 4 letter Scots word, not one or other of the Scottish leaders (whereas the egomaniac really had to be DT for The Guardian).
There will be the occasional example in the Telegraph and The Times, of course, but I'd hazard a guess that more crossword setters read the Guardian than any other newspaper - and I think that's particularly evident in the area of advanced cryptics (there was a lot of weeping and wailing in the surfeit of Brexit puzzles we were treated to, for example - and I've seen a lot of clues expressing similar sentiments). But The Guardian's team of setters do seem to be in something of a super-league - I'm still pretty miffed about Nutmeg's dig on VE Day, of all days - 'England insignificant in the past' (and notice 'England', not Britain!).
