Oh, OK - it helps if you have the right name in 41. I had Scalegri, but I see a poster has drawn our attention to Sr Scaliger. So 28d can be what it was wanting to be after all.

Thank you for those various helpful hints and pointers. I now have more of it filled in, as I listen to R4's tribute to Humphrey Lyttleton.

The noble family of the Scaliger (also Scaligeri, from de Scalis or della Scala) were Lords of Verona

I'm still unsure of or stumped by three:
13 - is it Whole -o-l-?
22 - is this scrutiny?
26 - is this Love -h-t?
(maybe love chat? If so, why?)

22a is scru-tiny(ref to henry james)

13 is whole world(the whorl came from 24)

13 whole world
26 some what

Twm #44:
13 - yes (the definition's the last three words)
22 - yes - say 'scru' for 'screw'
26 - no, the definition's the first two words of the clue; you just need to line three little words up.

Thanks Jer and Carrots - otley - duh! But at least I am now bang up to date with all the places in the British Isles that had POW camps!
