I believe it is now 6pm in the UK? If not, the jury will disregard the following until such time as 6pm.

Honorable mentions to:
mattrom 2 for the terse semi-&lit
Paulhalbershon 30 for the silky smooth yet grimly topical surface
ginge 33 for the silky smooth yet grimly historical surface

But my winner is:
Rosalind 31, for being fun.

Four things
1 are aristo and buddy the same person?
2 rosalind indicated "just for fun" for @31
3 can someone explain how it works?
4 prize? Though I suspect that I might not like to see it!)

I feel like a New Age American right now; I think that everyone should get a trophy. What a crop of great clues! I'd like to list them all, but will run off some especially nice touches: mattrom's race annihilation, paul's mothership and balls, buddy's traumatized marchesa and excellent scams are rampant, jono's cropped carcasses and Valentine's Day, faiton's minces, paulh's whipped cream, chrise's service, fiery's dropping acid, granama's almost holy, bigbad's welding car seams, rosalind's mob in Amritsar, ginge's nifty baroque device... Well, I could go on and on. Although paulh had already used part of this clue, I'm going with jimmygtal @25 with his delightfully whimsical:

Butcher's bottom submerged in whipped cream (8)

(in real life more likely a senator or MP).

I've always been deeply moved by histories of King Philip's War. Here's an appropriately elemental monument at the site of one of its most heartbreaking "battles".

Thanks, all of you. Most remarkable entries.

Ah! I suspect that buddy has got mixed up between Clueless and Peer Review!

Thanks aristo, and for the mention. I'll have a look at the prize in a while.

Sorry, I'll have to post again - I've forgotten who the winner was!
