Hi, stuck on 28 down, 29 and 34 across, which I think might be autocrat? Help would be appreciated.

Almost completed before resorting to cheating, which I'm glad I did because I'd never heard of the words to the answers I didn't get - taberet, tapis, sabot, whitecap.
Can't parse 9d:
Without James 1 at the front, a fierce battle (3,4).
Iwo Jima,
I can see the 'without James 1' giving 'wo Ji' and the final 'a' from the clue, but that leaves the first 'i' and the 'm' unaccounted for.
Also, where's the 'water, not fresh' in 1a:
Channels in motorway area provide equine with water, not fresh (4,5). Mass media.

StrangelyBrown, for 9 D, I think it's I, 1 at the front, Wo, without, Jim, James , A, in clue.

StevieGee, that's what I thought of too, but the 'not fresh' seemed unexplained. I did wonder if it was something to do with salt water and fresh water, but got no further!

Hi Malone - An alternative could be:

M = Motorway
I(f) = provide not (f)resh remove the f.

Thanks, StevieGee. I'm afraid I'm not totally convinced - the 'not fresh' is too far away from 'provide'* for me. It' definitely looks a rather clunky clue, unless I've missed something very obvious!

*provided would be needed for 'if', I think.

Thanks for trying to decipher it, I agree with 'rather clunky'.
