Many thanks for your clues and votes. I didn't choose KINGFISHER because I'm keen on chess but I was pleasantly surprised to see two references to the 1972 World Chess Champion, Bobby Fischer, and also mattrom@2's chess reference to 'king' as a 'man'. Yes, the queen is a man too!
With jono@14 and paul@5 tied first with 3 votes each I am once again having to adjudicate. Difficult as usual, but I award first place to paul@5, overlooking what I assume is a typo in 'girlfriend' and a perhaps superfluous hyphen in 'sort of'. I liked his conventions, although jono's 'disbelief on the right' was pretty good too.
Bird seen as girlfriend (sort of) meets the Queen, but first the family (10)
It had no influence on my decision, but it's appropriate that Paul also received a vote for his @4. Well done, Paul, and here is the prize:

I am not a birdwatcher, but I know it is difficult to catch sight of a kingfisher. It is easy to search for longer kingfisher clips if you wish.
