I have filled grid, except for 14a.
Have solved the east/west thematic part, but am thrown by the reference to four unchecked letters in the southern silvered block. I can only see two unchecked letters? Any advice folks?

the 4th, 5th, 6th and 9th letters of that silvered area are unchecked as far as the original gridfill is concerned.

For 14a, think of a more formal word for a letter. Then think of someone who wrote and sent a few of these.

The unchecked letters are in cols 6,7, 8 and 11.

For 14, "some people receiving letter" is the definition, some of the rest is anagram fodder.

For 14a I've got a biblical reference.

My grid is really lopsided, I've got the RHS completed but the LHS is virtually empty!

Thanks Buddy and Nelson. I have all the thematic stuff now. But still working on 14. Maybe I have a letter wrong. Or it’s a non-Chambers word.

Hi Lumen,

14a is in Chambers but only the singular, so you need to drop an S from the anagram fodder.

Yes I had the wrong city at 9d. All done! Back to the Listener which is really tough I think.

Lumen - see Brendan's nudge above. You'll find the people who received the letter in the NT.

In 12a is the "hooligan" a 3 letter Scottish slang word?
