Thank you for answers.
You know it's time to throw in the towel when you've got every crossing letters to a word but still can't get the answer. Not surprising really, when I put them into a word finder site and got words I've never heard of - orpin, octillion, solidi, propjet, flypitchers.
Time to give up but could you put me out of my misery with one more.
8d Trouble-making sextet (4-1-5)
How is 'half-a-dozen' (assuming that's the answer) trouble-making?

This had some rather complicated but interesting clues and yet I'm stuck on my final, which looks like it should be plain-sailing but isn't, viz 18ac. I have E-D-R-, Spin surrounding our leading female jockey. Please don't let me go to bed frustrated, thanks.

This is one of my all time least favourte crosswords and I am not even finished yet.

A deceased jockey, Solidi. Loose clues all over the place. Like building a wall with jellies and jam as your buiilding blocks and mortar.
