Have no idea about Puck of Pook's Hill, but have been to Wayland's Smithy, having done a year of the Ox Cert in Archaeol more years ago than I care to remember!
Why only a year? Not interested in writing any more essays. Plus I could hardly afford it.

Evening all, a marvellous response with 37 clues from 19 setters - well done all of you.

Mattrom, kt17 and penda yet to vote and its tight - any of 9 clues can win or tie for the win .

Must get showered and fed but will look in later and wrap up as soon as possible.

Rosalind @72
Yes, it's interesting when the mythical smith (referenced in Puck of Pook's Hill) became associated with an actual barrow.

Thanks mattrom and anyone else for whom the timings were a bit out.

We currently have a tie between granama #14 and rossim #41.

Kt 17 has yet to cast a vote so under the circumstances I'll extend to 2130.

Ok the wait is over. A big thanks to all of our clever contestants.

In a very enjoyable contest that showcased a very high standard of clue writing the final result of the voting was a tie.

It falls to me to declare this week's winner as granama1 with the lovely surface , solid wordplay and super def. displayed in #14

Female and drunk ogre go at it hammer and tongs! (5)

Bad luck rossim - the story of Jeff and Geoff was genius.

Well done granama1; it feels nice to have voted for the winner.

Thank you marty, what a good word. I enjoyed watching the sword maker. It's difficult to imagine someone being thrown out of their family home for chosing to make swords! My younger son started to make them from lego, wood etc as soon as he was able and my grandson now does the same.

Thank you so much for the vote, icvotria (does your "name" mean anything?), encouraged me no end, and for the mentions paul and spike.
