7d "Very serious sign of what is to come" (7)

E?R?E?T Looks like it must be EARNEST for serious, but don't see how the sign of what is to come. Only alternative seems to be EERIEST but again can't see the parsing

Any help much appreciated

Earnest - it's a double meaning.

Hi The word EARNEST occurs in the hymn " Through the night of doubt and sorrow" The hymn is often sung at crossword-solvers conventions!

3 dn: 'Somebody unimportant - or the chief?' (2-3). It must be NO-ONE but I can't see why (not that it really matters but if I can't parse every clue I don't consider I've finished!). Any help appreciated.

Gazzar, 'the chief' would be No. 1, 'somebody unimportant' is a no-one.
