Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' has King Duncan promising Macbeth with '...for an earnest of a greater honour...' i.e. a pledge of something else to come.

Just to be more accurate with the Macbeth reference in my previous post - it's actually Ross who, with Angus, meets Macbeth on the 'blasted heath' to say how delighted King Duncan is with Macbeth's success in battle.

'And, for an earnest of a greater honour, he bade me, from him, call thee Thane of Cawdor.'
