Much obliged, Ginge. All done now. I had thought it appropriate for P to end up on 40a but not of leaving one of the letters in situ.

All done, except that I cannot parse 27 down. I am happy to enter the only word which will fit, but for the sake of completeness, it would be nice to know how the clue works. Any hints?

It's the R of races that moves, giving you two identical single-letter abbreviations and a further single-letter abbreviation, in which you place three letters taken alternately from two words in the clue.

Absolutely excellent all round.

Only loose end for me is 7. Can't figure it out. Have gone for a t at the end as that gives me a 3 letter word that could mean control and works with the endgame. Would appreciate someone explaining the wordplay or letting me know the correct answer.

Smellyharry, it's a 'hidden in the clue', so my letter is different - though the moving letter has to be done first...

21 Down Fishy deal on old city above all in Brest
and
25 Down Periodically our head's occupied by Stuart's case for consideration.
I know what I want to put for 25 Down, but can't work it out satisfactorily.
