For this one it appears I was completely wrong!

If you have completed could you give me a nudge on the relevance of the position of the extra word (march) in 1 across? or the set in 34 down? After that I shall go and have a good cry!

What a difficult crossword!

Hi Williamseal, in 34d both the answer and replacement were Astronomer Royals.

I think the length of the other thread gives a good indication of how difficult this was - at least for me. Without the help from others, I wouldn't have even come close to finishing.

williamseal - all of the extra words are of 5 letters (so, 'bin' can't be one of them).

One last thing I'd like to clear up - 5d and 33d are both types of anniversary but all the other sets are different - is there something I'm not seeing?

Hi Brendan. 33d is a birthstone as opposed to a wedding anniversary
