Ever since someone asked a few weeks ago for people not to give answers in capitals, that order has been strictly obeyed - even to the extent of giving no answers at all.

I have two entries for which I cannot see anything that will fit so I wonder if I have the right letters.

1a WE?TT??

24d DO?LE?IS

They are both thematic so it would be too long a story to give the clues. Be as blatant as you like. Answers received with gratitude. No need to be subtle! Thank you.

Hi Orson,

1a Your letters are correct - both answers are Grand National winners( the mountain thing is a real red herring.)

24d Your O should be an A. Both answers are were poet laureates.

Thanks very much xwordfan and brendan. I had KOTO for 28a. I should have looked at the wordplay more carefully. I didn't think there would be more than one harp-like instrument KO??.

This one was way too difficult for me, so I have given up but would be grateful if someone could put me out of my misery.
As this thread contains answers, could I look at 1 across, 34 down and 36 down. These are three clues where I have solved the original and identified the surplus words: march, storm and bin. How do these words indicate a set and why is their position relevant.
Or to put it another way - please help someone out there!!
Thanks

You're right, xwordfan. Lists can mean borders - the borders of pinafore being p and e.

Williamseal, for 36d, body of Orvieto is OO, containing space = EN.

The surplus words don't make a set.....if you take letters from them. in order 1234554321 you get "more or less"
march is the 6th word in the clue so you go forward 6 from when ben nevis won the Grand national ....to get West tip ( i think this is how it goes )

34a storm is the 2nd word so you go 2 away from Pond in the astronomer royal list
