Simond9x, glad you're sorted.

Barretter, I didn't thank you for your thank you - I knew it wasn't for me!

Just been reading this thread. The reference to “bobs” in 68ac isn’t to haircuts, I think. At the school in question, if you play cricket in he summer term, you are a “dry bob”, and if you go in for rowing, you are a “wet bob”. These expressions are in Chambers under their respective first words.

Sorry for the duplicate post. The software suggested that I had not ticked the “I’m not a robot box”, when I had.

Thanks, Wintonian. My 'haircuts' thing was just a guess, I was trying to come up with something - never as crucial when the solver already has the answer. It's good, though, to have the correct information added.

Ray, I think the Rebus is the fictional detective, a Detective Inspector... so 'his consternation' would be... ?

Almost all done now, with a bit of help from previous replies and my good friend google.

The only one I can't see the parsing of is 3d, where I don't see where the first three letters come from - as a semi-parse, I see one whole fish rather than two halves, which might be the same mathematically, but probably isn't in crosswordland.

Can anyone give me a pointer? I wouldn't want my cat going hungry!
