Jazz singing in which improvised, meaningless syllables are sung to a melody

This was a style often used by Ella Fitzgerald, so she could be described as a "scatter".

Thank you brendan. Only jazz I've ever listened to is Jelly Roll Morton, played on the in-house Hammond decades ago!

kt - I remember doing a clue that used ' better ' in that way. I got reprimanded and was told that the word as in gambler is ' bettor '. I think my clue was " One who gambles, leaving richer " (6,3)
