No wonder I was having such trouble with this crossword. I don't drink beer or lager.

I didn't start until 4.30pm, but am not feeling well (a tummy bug not the dreaded CV). Normally, I have a glass of wine at 6.00pm, which always helps loosen the neurons, but I don't think my stomach is up to it.

How about a hint for 18d Issue raised by new bride makes you quail, say (4,4) I have G?M? ????

You could eat it (though not with an upset tummy!)

Many thanks Chris for your hint. I've got it, but am unable to parse it. It led me to an answer for 24ac where I assume sprite is the definition, though I can't parse that either. This in turn led me to finally getting 19d, thence 29ac, 22ac and 22d. I may even have 27d, but like most of them can't parse it. I still have the first word of 15d to find, though I have an idea for it,but can't parse tthat either!

I'll plod on for a bit.

18 you have a publication ("issue") upwards, followed by an anagram of "bride".

Thanks Chrise

I now realise I had made a mistake. I haven't got 22ac

I've googled taxes, but not identified the right one for 4d, which ends in S.

Must break off to watch Hidden. I've no doubt I'll be back later.

And I'm back, but still stuck

I may just give up and go to bed. I didn't understand the hint for 12ac in this thread. What is the definition? I'd assumed it was corporation as in beer belly, but I cannot see the word play. I still can't get 9ac or 4d and 5d. Any hints for them for tomorrow morning will be gratefully received.

Hi Roof,

12a - definition is "trouble for corporation" (problem of the tummy) - 5 letter word for "move into" + usual 2 letter abbr. for "computing" + IS

9a - definition is "refuse" (as in rubbish) - 5 letter word for "to fight" + 5 letter word for "little cash" minus it's first letter/losing face.

4d definition is "depressed area" - 2 letter interjection for "I don't know" reversed/about + 4 letter word for a "tax" (it's not a common one)

5d - definition is "fighter" (an aircraft) - 4 letter word for "inclines" reversed/to lift + 4 letter word for "sack"

Glass of wine, what an excellent idea:-)

Sorry, I'm late to the table as I've been polishing off some excellent Paulaner lager. As a retired hop merchant, I understand beer to mean the generic name for various styles of yeast-fermented malted brews such as ale or lager. Ale is brewed using top-fermenting yeast and lager is brewed using bottom fermented yeast. When top fermenting yeast flocculates it remains in suspension in the ale; it needs finings or isinglass to clarify the brew. On the other hand, bottom fermenting yeast eventually sinks to the bottom of the fermenting vessel and lager thus needs no special clarification (lager means storage in German). The colour of a beer is determined by the type of malt used and doesn't effect its class. Indeed the first lagers were dark . Hic

Hi Proletarian,

This week's theme has definitely struck a chord. If you haven't already, you should read Chris' posts. - like you he knows the ins and outs of the brewing process.

Hic indeed!:-)
