I was about to write that this was another puzzle at the difficult end of the scale, but then I realised that I've yet to do a Guardian Prize that I found easy!

That said, it did take me a while to get going and I'm still not sure what the words in brackets "there are ten here", have to do with 15d.

There are some really great clues with 24a, and 14a (one borrows a word from the other?) among my favourites, along with 3d, 24d and 22a.

My heart did sink when I saw the 2 letters I had for 8d and the number of possible options, but thankfully I saw the answer fairly quickly.

The clues that game me the most trouble were 4d, where I didn't know the "tax" and, for some reason, 19d - although, when I look back at it now, it's difficult to see why.

There's also a fairly topical clue in 10a

My COD - like I said there are lots of brilliant clues but I'll plump for 24a - it's not only a clever clue but a great word:-)

Thanks to Picaroon for an excellent crossword.

15a - I wonder if the "there are ten here" refers to 10a, which is also a brand of this?

Hi Brendan

There are 10 of the 2nd part to 15d in the answers - for example the clues you mentioned (8d, 10a, 24a)

Enjoyed this one - it was a slow solve but got there in the end.

4d also gave me trouble - it was my LOI, and I thought 19d was spelled differently.

Yes, that is it! Even 27d, 23d, 17a, etc. are beer brands. Thanks!

Hi Mathi,

I think quite a few people are going to really enjoy this crossword. The more I look at it the more there is to appreciate.

There are some fine guests in here, but I don't fancy a pint of 12ac.

Yes, a good puzzle with a theme, though it took a while to complete. But I don’t think I ever seen, or heard of, any those British beer brands in the US!

Hi Biggus,

I did wonder if the 29a translation of 15d might be hidden somewhere in the crossword, but I can't see it:-(

Hi Mathi,

I've just checked and there's a 15d called 21a made in Sawyer in Michigan - something for everybody:-)
