I think it’s a word meaning ‘bristles’, but seems a pretty lame clue if so.

I think it's just playing on/playing with the phrase 'The cat's whiskers' which has a different meaning, the best of its kind , whereas it's the literal meaning that's needed. It's not great!

If Quiz is right and 41a is bristly, the most likely start of 37d is R, agree?
Welcome Malone - What on earth is the answer to 17d? I have ?IR?S?LO?S? Perhaps this is to do with IVR which I know nothing about.

I was thinking that the first letter of 37d is H.

All of the unclued (except 32d) can be found in Chambers under the entry for 21d.

Farr, 17 D is two words - part of a phrase, you daft so-and-so.

The IVR leads to a very short answer, seeing as it's just the registration mark for vehicles.
