Finally found the right Wikipedia entry and have finished. Very good, although I found it significantly harder than many it seems. The thread has tied up all of my loose ends apart from 20d - can someone explain the wordplay?

Glad you made it, Harry. 20d is a carriage, 5 letters, minus B, plus D.

First to solve for me this week was 3d, with a curious feeling of déjà vu... :-)

Thanks rad. I was convinced the b was going to be at the start of the carriage for some reason.

Thanks also to Sammina for pointing out the significance of the name in 2. Am very familiar with his work but hadn't twigged the thematic connection til you pointed it out.

My only quibble with this otherwise nicely ingenious puzzle is that in my book when a second mission takes place 59 years and 2 months after the first they are NOT “separated by sixty years”. Ok, I guess I’m nitpicking, but we are I think used to greater precision in these rubrics!
