Over here, at least, the YMCA is usually called the Y.

Thank you, aristo, but am still in the dark!
Is not the YMCA a youth movement, helping them to "play a fulfilling role in their communities"? Over here, a gym is a place where people do a large amount of physical exercise.

Ah well, I'll remember that. "Gym" may mean Y

I think it's just that the Y always has a gym, and most people go there primarily for physical exercise. The one near us is rather upscale, with all sorts of fancy equipment and a swimming pool and (I think) a sort of coffeehouse, but most people would think of a visit there as going to the gym. I wonder how many Ys still offer spiritual enlightenment.
