29d probably parses as E THA(T) L with the E missing and L for liquid with thaT shortened...

I have F at the end of 30a so 32d starts with F.

Ferret could be a detective. So Feet looks right.

Nice is French. Fat would be Gras.

29D If, as you say, wordplay may be one letter short, I can see THA "that's nearly" + L "top of liquid" but not the " E"
